The climate alarm is ringing — loudly
A new El Niño is forming, and this one is shaping up to be one of the strongest on record. The World Meteorological Organization has confirmed an 80 percent likelihood of El Niño conditions prevailing from June through August 2026, with that probability rising to near 90 percent through November. NOAA has declared the event active, with a 63 percent chance it becomes "very strong" before year's end — a classification that would place it among the largest ever recorded.
The last El Niño made 2024 the hottest year in recorded history. The one building right now could be stronger still. For Australian agriculture — wheat, canola, beef, dairy, horticulture, rice, and sugar — this is not a distant forecast. It is unfolding now.

What is El Niño — and why does it hit agriculture so hard?
El Niño is a natural climatic phenomenon occurring every two to seven years, triggered by the anomalous warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. That warming reshapes global atmospheric circulation — redistributing rainfall, temperatures, and seasonal patterns across every continent.
For agriculture, the consequences are severe and predictable. El Niño causes warmer and drier weather in major cropping regions, dramatically increasing the risk of drought. It disrupts monsoon cycles, shortens growing seasons, and degrades pastureland. Abiotic stress — the kind caused by drought and extreme heat — is already responsible for more than 50 percent of agricultural losses worldwide. El Niño amplifies that threat across the board.
Historical scale
The 2015–16 El Niño affected more than 60 million people and triggered USD 5 billion in humanitarian appeals across 23 countries. The last "super" event cost the global agricultural sector USD 327 million in losses alone.
Australia: on the frontline
Australia sits at the sharp end of El Niño's reach. The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that Australia is transitioning from La Niña conditions into El Niño territory, with some international climate models placing the probability as high as 90 percent by mid-2026.
Australia is the world's second-largest exporter of wheat, canola, and beef — commodities that sit directly in El Niño's crosshairs. The pattern has a well-documented track record. Australia's most severe droughts on record — in 1982, 1994, 2002, 2006, and 2015 — all coincided with El Niño conditions.
